Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

There are two types of Ph.D. candidates in Electronics Engineering: general Ph.D. candidates and direct entry Ph.D. candidates from B.S. or M.S. degree.

General Ph.D. Candidates are required to complete 18 credit hours. Each student should choose a particular area of interest from the three specialized groups: the Integrated Circuits and Systems (ICS) Group, the Nanoelectronics (NE) Group, or the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) Group, and take at least 9 credit hours in the courses, which need to be approved by one’s thesis advisor, from one’s specialized group.

Direct entry Ph.D. Candidates from B.S. or M.S. degree, on the other hand, should complete at least 36 credit hours. No less than 18 credit hours of courses, which need to be approved by one’s thesis advisor, should be taken from their specialized group. These candidates also need to choose a particular area of interest from ICS group, NE group, or EDA group.

Both types of Ph.D. candidates are required to take Seminar, Special Project, Colloquium I, Colloquium II and Thesis. Yet these courses are not included in the obligatory 18 (general) / 36(direct entry) credit hours. Foreign languages are not required courses, and they cannot be counted in the obligatory 18 (for general Ph.D. candidates) / 36 (for direct entry Ph.D. candidates) credit hours for degree fulfillment. Further information is as follows:

Qualifying Exam

The qualifying exam includes reviews and written exams. The reviews are executed by the academic committee of admission. The written exams are held by GIEE with the results as a part of the review for the academic committee of admission.

The written exams are comprised of the general (基本科目), internal (本所科目), and external subjects (外所科目). Internal subjects are those listed in GIEE courses list, while external subjects are not. The general subject tests include four categories:

  • Category A: Engineering Mathematics -- Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics, Complex Variable, and Probability and Statistics (take two out of five)
  • Category B: Circuit Theory & Signals and Systems
  • Category C: Electronics
  • Category D: Computer Science -- Algorithm, Introduction to Computer System, and Data Structures (take two out of three)

Each specialized group has its own regulations on the written exams, which are specified below:

EDA Group General subject: 1 category
Internal subject: 3 categories

Dissertation Review

Doctoral candidates can apply for the dissertation review with the application form signed both by the applicant and the dissertation advisor.

There are two ways of dissertation review:

(1) Dissertation Credit Review: A qualified dissertation should have at least 8 points of credit. At least one of the papers should attain four points of credit. The credits for dissertation are counted under the following measure:

Please note that “Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering” should be specified as the affiliation in the paper, or else the credits will not be counted.

(2) Contribution Review: The officer of academic affairs along with the dissertation advisor may invite one to five professors in GIEE to form a review panel. The review panel may have the contribution reviewed via:

a. foreign scholars and experts,

b. scholars affiliated with GIEE or other domestic institutes, or

c. an open contribution display to teachers and students in GIEE following with a vote by secrete ballot. Please note the review panel should not only join but also invite more than five other fellow (associate) professors to participate. The review passes with three-fourths of the participants' votes.

Should the Ph.D. candidate fail to pass the contribution review, he/she can apply for another review with more qualified achievements after six months.

FAQ

1: How should I know if my conference paper is of international or general level?
A: A conference paper, for example, is one under full paper review. You may ask the officer of academic affairs as he/she is responsible for the dissertation credit review. However, ambiguity or controversy over un-classified journals may be reviewed by the academic committee of admission.

2: I have seven papers and they have 8 points of credit in total. Can I pass the dissertation credit review?
A: You can apply for the dissertation credit review only if one of them gets four points of credit or above.

3: I have finished my courses and my recent paper is under the full paper review. When it is accepted I will have more than eight points of credit in total for my dissertation. Can I apply for the dissertation credit review now to save some time?
A: You can ask your supervisor to help with the pre-review process. Yet please note each professor has only two pre-review quotas. You may need to ask if your advisor still has a slot and if you have completed all other requirements.
